Heavy Equipment Training - Is It Right For You?

By: Dale Viviano

Judging by how fascinated most kids are with construction, it is amazing that more of them don't go into it when they are older. Whenever I'm on a crew, people both young and old stop by to watch a building going up. They look amazed. They can't keep their eyes off of it. Although construction does not have that much respect as a field, it is a very specialized area. You need heavy equipment training, safety training, and a good deal of knowledge to put up houses. If you enjoy manual labor as I do, you should consider the number of heavy equipment jobs out there. Being a heavy equipment operator is a rewarding career.

One of the things I like about heavy equipment training is that it does not take very long and it is very hands-on. You can be done with the program in a year or two, and half of that time is spent way up in cranes. There is nothing more exhilarating than the first time you get your hands on the controls of a ten ton crane. The feeling of power, the majesty of the machine, and the spectacular view that you get to see from the top are amazing. People think that buildings are built by architects, but it is the people with heavy equipment training that make it all happen. I don't care what people think of construction workers. Since I got my heavy equipment training, I have had many reasons to be proud of what I have accomplished.

Of course, heavy equipment training is a way to advance a construction career. If you've never been on a work crew before, it is best to start out with an entry-level construction job before you go in for heavy equipment training. That way you'll get to know whether a career in construction is right for you. If it is something you want to spend your life doing, heavy equipment training is almost a necessity. With a shrinking job market and the volume of unskilled labor, if you do not have a specialization you will not be able to get very many jobs in construction. You certainly will not be able to support a family in this day and age. But if you do go and get your heavy equipment training, you will be amazed at the way that jobs just open up for you. If you are willing to work hard and can show the boss that you have the goods, the world is your oyster.
