Have you ever stopped to consider how similar you are to family members? There are times that my sister and I will arrive at a family event with the same sweater or blouse on. Last year I arrived at my sister’s house and found that she had just purchased the same wall hanging for their bedroom that I had bought for mine. In many ways we are very different from each other, yet when it comes to what we wear and what we hang on our walls we like the same things.
Each time this happens we recall the Christmas when our parents and our brother exchanged the same gift. That Christmas the ice cream machine was a hot item. It was one of the first years that the electric ice cream machine was introduced. Prior to that time homemade ice cream was made by turning a crank and spinning a cylinder in ice chips and salt to form the frozen treat. My parents had the old fashioned ice cream machine. It was brought out each year on father’s day. We would sit out in the yard and take turns cranking the cylinder until the ice cream formed.
The year the electric ice cream machine hit the market my brother and his family were living in Colorado. They were not going to be able to make the trip home to Minnesota for Christmas. My parents bought several gifts for my brother’s children and also one of the ice cream makers for my brother and his wife. Everything was packed and taken to the post office to be shipped to Colorado. About three days after the shipment was sent the postal service drove into my parent’s yard with a delivery. There were presents for the siblings and also a box for mom and dad. On Christmas Eve when we opened the gifts my parents found that there was an ice cream machine in the box from my brother. We laughed that they each could have saved money in the postal fees if they had just kept the ice cream machine that they bought. On Christmas day my brother called and reported that they too had laughed when they opened the present. They had thought that they had come up with such a unique present for our parents. My brother promised that on father’s day he would make a batch of ice cream in his new maker.
No matter how far apart we live as family members there are still bonds that keep us close. Memories and love have a way of closing the gaps that miles create.
