Animal Science - A Rewarding Career Choice

By: Jean Houston

When I was growing up, we always kept pets. My parents were big believers in the virtue of having pet animals. Not only did they teach kids responsibility, but they also furnished companionship and affection. Whenever a child had something that their parents couldn't understand, he or she could talk to the pet dog and everything would be all right. Even though a pet couldn't understand what you were saying, it could still listen, and sometimes that was enough.

As I grew up, I realized how much I cared about animals. I decided that I wanted to have a career in animal science. At first, I had hesitated. Veterinarian medicine was a pretty harsh field for the most part. Basically, the animal sciences had not advanced all that far. Many times, you had to put animals to sleep – It would be all that you could do for help them. Other areas of animal science were even worse. Working in animal husbandry, for example, was something that I could never do. The idea of those big factories designed to raise animal livestock for meat and dairy disgusted me.

Finally, however, I gave in to my irresistible desire to work with animals. I went to an animal science University. I had always heard that the science of animals was pretty easy. Basically, people told me that it was physiology for dummies. Although it was difficult to get into med school, anyone could get into animal science – or so the popular theory held.

What I discovered, however, was that animal sciences are actually quite challenging at times. Of course it is true that animal science is not quite as rigorous as medical school, but it isn't a piece of cake either. Animal science professionals handle all sorts of important jobs. They supervise animals for experiments, breeding programs, training, and many other fields. As a matter of fact, most animal trainers start with a degree in animal science before they go on to teach obedience schools.

Now that I am officially an animal scientist, my life couldn't be better. I love working with animal science, because I love working with animals. I get to take care of them, make them better, and instruct their owners in proper care and feeding. If you really love animals and want to spend your life around them, you should definitely consider a career in animal science. It has done a lot to give meaning and fulfillments.
