It seems that there are always new “have to have” toys on the market. Each year especially close to the holidays the media campaign for one toy or another begins in earnest. The target population is usually three to six year olds. The parents of these children will stand in line for hours, push and shove other shoppers and pay outlandish prices for the toy that they feel there child has to have. It seems that everyone forgets that the frenzy ends and the toys are plentiful on the market within a few weeks time.
One classic toy that holds its appeal and value are the American girl dolls. The manufacturer has done a great job to appealing to young girls and mothers alike. The American girl dolls are now becoming a collection of more than one generation. Women that have had the dolls as a child want to give them to their daughters. The dolls are well made and a timeless classic that appeal to a wide range audience.
As with all popular toys there are people that try to exploit the popularity of an item by manufacturing dolls and clothing that look like the original. I have also seen many outfits that are made for the American girl dolls available at arts and craft fairs. Some of the outfits are beautifully crafted and are rich in detail, but they are not manufactured by the company and will not hold the value like the clothes manufactured by the American girl dolls company.
One of the cleverer consumer campaigns that the company has done is having girls book a luncheon with their American girl dolls at the popular Chicago restaurant where the dolls are available for purchase. My girl friend made reservations three months in advance so that she and her daughter could have lunch with the American girl doll and also look at all the latest fashions that are available for the dolls. This is a spending collection to have, but through the years the dolls do hold their value and due to the superior construction they will last for the owner to pass on to yet another generation. The spin off dolls that are made to look like the American girl dolls do not have the details that make each one of these dolls a work of art. It is worth the extra money to purchase the original. The dolls that are made to look like the originals do not hold any value and tend to cheapen the idea of this classic collection. If you are buying a doll for a child buy the original.
