Drug Tests - A Necessary Evil In Today's World

By: Evan Tyler

I probably sound like an old school teacher when I say this, but why in the world are some folks still using drugs? It's so bizarre to me. You have teenagers who're addicted to illegal substances; some of them for no good reason whatsoever. You have celebrities who get into drugs just because they can afford them and they're apparently board. No wonder those of us who avoid drugs demand random drug tests. They're basically essential for all companies and workplaces now days. Then there are many parents who like to randomly test their teenagers for drug use. I have to say I can see why. This age-old problem is still out of hand.

The last company I worked for insisted on immediate drug tests if you were hired. So once I was hired, they sent me directly to a clinic to test my urine. Hmm, no skin off my back. I've never tried a single drug in my life. However, it seems like so many people can't make the same statement. So I guess my question is; why not? Why do so many people feel compelled to try drugs? I was offered them as a child just like many teens are, but I said no because I was informed of what they do to people. And I think most kids know as well. They simply fail to listen for some odd reason. So naturally we have to enforce drug tests in the workplace and sometimes at schools. If we fail to be cautious, it can come back on us. Imagine a paramedic who was hooked on heroine. It's doubtful he could perform his duties on the job without any problems. Any number of things could go wrong, and that could result in the death of an innocent person. Therefore the employer has to be sure that doesn't occur. If it were to happen, the employer is the one who could catch all the heat.

Of course there will always be those who're against drug tests. They claim it's a violation of their civil rights. Typically these are the ones who're using no doubt. And like a trapped rat they hate to be exposed and persecuted. But, if you have a child or family member that you feel is using illegal substances, go ahead and have them randomly tested. At least this way you'll know, and be able to help prevent worse things to come.
