Almost everyone I know is aware of the epidemic of aggressive driving, and most people participate in it actively. Whether or not you will admit it to yourself, you probably are in as much of a hurry to get where you are going as everyone else is. People take all kinds of dangerous risks just to pass a car. It doesn't improve your life that much. You might get where you are going 5 or 10 minutes earlier than if you drove safely, but is it worth it? Personally, I think taking a a defensive driving courses should be a requirement for every driver!
If you have never even considered defensive driving classes, you are not alone. Taking a defensive driving course is not very popular. Most people never even give it a thought unless they are ordered by a court to do so. Nonetheless, defensive driving courses are a good idea for a number of reasons. One of the best reasons to take a defensive driving course is that it will lower your insurance rates. If this is not enough of a reason for you, you should see what defensive driving courses did for my aunt. The difference is amazing!
Before my aunt took a defensive driving course, she was one of the most reckless drivers I have ever met. My parents would not even get in the car with her. They flat out refused, although it caused family strife. You see, like most offensive drivers, my aunt thought that her driving was great. She felt that her ability to pass cars with only inches to spare was a sign of her superior driving skills. In reality, she was a danger and a hazard for the other people on the road. If she had not gotten a hefty ticket, and been ordered by a court to take a defensive driving course, she never would've changed.
Since the defensive driving course, however, she has mellowed. She has learned the consequences that bad driving can have. She has seen statistics about the number of crashes caused by aggressive drivers. The defensive driving course has given her the skills to be a truly good driver. She knows now that what makes a good race car driver is not the same thing that makes a good street driver. A defensive driver is less likely to crash. She understands that years and years of getting to work 5 or 10 minutes early are not worth one severe crash.
