If you’ve watched the dramatic television show called ‘Criminal Minds’, you are familiar with what a criminal profile is. Though the characters solve the mystery and get the bad guy at the end, reality isn’t always that simple. The process of formulating the criminal profile on the TV show is fairly realistic. It may take much longer to actually crate a criminal profile than the few moments it does on TV. Once there are enough of elements and details present, a criminal profile can be created. Though not always successful in being completely accurate, those who create a criminal profile are usually accurate to a certain degree.
The purpose of creating a criminal profile is to give the authorities, and possibly the public, possible specific information about who the suspects may be. This profile might make the public or the authorities better able to analyze suspects or find people of interest who may fit the profile. Of course, having a criminal profile also helps to eliminate certain people or groups of people from the lists of suspects as well.
As horrible as it is to say, profiling is used most in any violent serial crimes. Those particular crimes might involve some sort of sexual acts that can give an even bigger advantage to those putting together a criminal profile. Typically, the more crimes a suspect commits, the more physical evidence that can be collected at the crime scene. By having more evidence to collect, authorities are one step closer to identifying and apprehending a suspect. You can also say that the more a suspect continues to get away with their crime, the more skilled they become. Suddenly, covering their tracks and hiding evidence may be easier for them. That’s when a skilled profiler needs to step in and figure out what is going on and who might be to blame.
In order to put together an accurate criminal profile, the investigators need to take incredibly cautious and careful steps when at the crime scene. The profiler will need to see all of the crime scene photos in complete detail. They will also need to know what the victim was doing before their attack or what their schedule was for that day. A profiler might also want to know the background of the victim and what the neighborhood is like. Any details that are not noticed or left out can affect the making of a criminal profile immensely. One the investigators know the victim’s behaviors, a profiler might be able to move forward on figuring out what the suspect’s behavior is like as well.
Many crimes have been solved thanks to having a detailed criminal profile. Hopefully, many more will.
