Criminal Defense - One Person's Opinion

By: Nicky Patterson

We’ve all heard horrible stories about innocent people sent to jail and it isn’t until years later that it is discovered that they really are innocent. Across this country, innocent people are serving time behind bars for crimes that they did not commit. There are likely some people on death row that are innocent as well. Of course, all prisoners will tell you that they are innocent. While it isn’t out of the possibility of jailing an innocent person, almost all of the convicted criminals are guilty and getting justice.

We’ve all seen the celebrities who are being accused of a crime and hiring not only a criminal defense attorney, but a criminal defense team. Suddenly, they have several professionals working on their case at all hours of the day. We all can’t be that fortunate. If you are arrested for a crime, whether you’re innocent or guilty, you have the right to have a criminal defense attorney present whenever you speak. If you don’t have the finances or means of obtaining a criminal defense attorney, the courts will provide one for you. There have been some who have acted as their own attorney, but no one ever recommends that approach. Typically, those don’t result in positive outcomes.

I also know about judges who let predators back out into society and attorneys who ignore their clients’ obvious guilt just to fight for their freedoms. I’ve seen child molesters walk free just because they had the proper criminal defense people working his case. That absolutely breaks my heart. In the past few years, some highly publicized cases came about with sexual predators abducting and harming children. At times, they may even kill their hostages. Knowing that someone scarred your child for life and then a powerful criminal defense attorney helped them to walk free is heartbreaking. Suddenly, that violent and sexual predator is back out looking for new victims. I do believe, sometimes, the criminal defense attorneys often know that their clients are guilty and they simply do not care. I wonder how those criminal defense attorneys can sleep at night knowing that the may have put someone else into danger by helping their clients walk free. I realize that this is a country based on freedom and that everyone deserves a fair trial, but how can they support their client’s behaviors. I just hope that someday, if I am in a jam and need law enforcement, they remember me. I can’t say that I envy their job, just like I can’t say that I like most criminal defense attorneys either.
