Cheap Prom Dresses - How To Get A Great Bargain

By: Nicky Patterson

Although most parents dream of buying their daughter the most extravagant gown they can find for her prom, this may not be feasible financially. Not only do they have to purchase a gown, but there are many other aspects to attending prom as well. The shoes, the make-up and visiting the hair salon all have to be factored into the final cost. Even though you may want to give your daughter the dress of her dreams, you probably do need to stick to a budget. There are beautiful cheap prom dresses out there, and the key to finding them is knowing when and where to look.

Every year, designers come out with a new line of gowns for prom. These are usually dresses that all the girls attending prom are interested in. Purchasing a dress like this is obviously going to be costly because it’s the latest style and you are likely buying it during prom season. Retailers know exactly when young women start looking for prom dresses and prices are sure to be at a premium. However, if you think ahead you can find cheap prom dresses months before anyone else even starts thinking about the big night.

After prom, everything prom related goes on sale. This includes the formal wear, the shoes and the accessories. If a girl knows she’ll be attending prom next spring, the previous summer is the time to buy. Although you’ll be picking through last year’s styles, these cheap prom dresses are every bit as beautiful as the new designs. It’s not uncommon to find dresses marked down up to 70% off after prom. For a family working with a limited amount of money, this means a huge savings.

Formal wear stores are the places to go to find such deals. These are the boutiques that sell not only dresses for prom, but wedding and bridesmaid dresses as well. Visiting there shortly after prom has passed will typically yield a healthy selection of unsold cheap prom dresses. Since most high school girls don’t gain or lose too much weight, buying a dress in your current size should be fine. In the event that the dress becomes too loose or too tight by the time prom does arrive, a trip to the seamstress will help correct that.

An alternative to buying a gown a year before the event arrives is to consider a used dress in the weeks before prom. Many girls change out of the prom dress early in the evening so they can attend some off-site after parties. Therefore the dresses are just gently used and can be in almost perfect condition. This is an ideal way to find cheap prom dresses as you can usually barter with the buyer over the price. If you do go this route have the dress professionally cleaned. Once you’ve done that no one will have any idea that this is the second prom your dress has attended. That’s a secret you can keep to yourself.
