Anime Video - Intense Fun And Excitement!

By: Brett Franklin

The anime style of animated film is immensely popular in Japan, where it originated and also around the world. Many of these shorts and feature films are released straight to video. In other parts of the world, this is considered inferior product but there is a very different attitude in Japan. Anime video releases have high production values and large budgets with the results being better than TV shows and holding their own with movie theatrical releases.

There is another reason as to why production companies like the direct to video route. There is less censorship given to anime video and there is a lot of flexibility in the format for telling a story. Some videos only carry one off films but there are numerous series, some with several episodes. Some of these series tie in with television shows with special programs being made for video release or they may be based on manga comics stories. They are normally available on Laserdisc or DVD systems and a thirty-minute episode is the average length.

Some productions are direct to video releases originally but are adapted into TV presentations or films afterwards. Music videos also come in the form of anime video productions, as putting popular music to anime is a favorite promotional tool. Videos soon caught on in Japan when VCRs became readily available in the 1970s. The productions contained a lot of sex, violence and bad language not seen in other media. The target audience has been mostly from the male population, although some anime caters for female audiences.

There had been a slump in sales when similar productions began to be broadcast over satellite and cable networks, an environment with less censorship than other networks. Today, sales have again picked up with more anime video specials taken from TV series.

Cited as the longest ever series to be released, Legend of the Galactic Heroes has around 160 episodes of anime video, which has been adapted from a series of science fiction novels. The story is set in the 35th century and involves a conflict between two civilizations. The supernatural Hellsing has appeared in many forms; a manga series, TV series and anime video presentations. The plot centers on vampires and mixes humor with adventure. A series called Earthian is targeted at a female audience and the main characters are angels who watch over the Earth's inhabitants and their dangerous activities.
