Despite competition from continental holidays, the traditional seaside holiday is still popular with a lot of British families, especially since more attention has been given to indoor attractions. British weather is not always reliable in the summer! One of the favorite seaside resorts is Great Yarmouth in the county of Norfolk. The town has many fine attractions and is a good base to explore the countryside, villages and waterways of the Norfolk Broads.
Visitors have been coming here since the 18th century for the bracing air and beaches stretching over fifteen miles. The Britannia Pier has entertainment, a theater and a fair. Wellington Pier was dismantled recently but is being re-built as a family leisure venue. The Hippodrome hosts seaside variety shows and a circus with circus acts and a water show. There's lots of fun for the kids at the Marina Centre in Great Yarmouth, which contains a large tropical swimming pool with a wave machine, bars and restaurants. There are also facilities to hold conferences.
The town has an interesting history, having grown as a major fishing port in the herring industry. Many fine buildings remain today, dating from the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian eras. The present market place has been serving the townsfolk since the 1200s and the Time and Tide Museum has part of the old town wall nearby. The public can visit the Tollhouse with its old dungeons and a statue in tribute to Admiral Lord Nelson, known as the Britannia Monument, stands in the town. Nelson was born in a village in Norfolk. The Elizabethan House Museum is dedicated to local history.
A grand view of the county can be seen from the Observation Tower, which stands at 120 feet. There is a lot to do in the area throughout the year and many attractions are indoors. The Atlantis Resort is another popular entertainment center for the family and The Jungle is an adventure play area for children aged under twelve. The pottery and herring fishing industry is explained at the Great Yarmouth Pottery and Herring Museum, where traditional pottery techniques are demonstrated. The Amazonia claims to have the largest collection of reptiles in the United Kingdom.
Outdoors is just as much fun with all the rides on the Pleasure Beach and other amenities in Great Yarmouth town. There is a model village and an 18-hole putting course with a pirate theme. The New Pleasurewood Hills has family shows and fair rides. Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens has an impressive collection of animals, birds and reptiles.
