Rising Gas Prices - Time To Take Out A Loan?

By: Alex Richardson

This past summer it seemed as if rising gasoline prices was the only thing that anyone was thinking about. It was on the news almost every day, and many of the people I saw around town were talking about the same thing. I guess this is understandable, as they were all fed up with what it costs to fill their gas tank. Even when it seemed the price of crude oil had gone down, the gas prices remained high. This is enough to make anyone very cranky.

Many people, myself included, wrote articles about how to save gas money. Though there are a lot of useful tips out there, the only way you can really save any sizable amount of money on gasoline prices is to quit driving. It’s not a secret that Americans love their cars, and it will take more than soaring gasoline prices to get them out of them. However, as much as the oil companies believe this to be true, I do think there is a breaking point. While I only curbed my driving a little this summer when gasoline prices were extremely high, there would have been a point when I seriously might cut driving down to accommodate the rising cost.

It is very convenient how gasoline prices rise very high in the summer when everybody wants to drive, and they fall drastically during the winter months. There is a silver lining to the falling winter prices however, as even though I do not take as many road trips during the winter, I will save money on my heating bill. Some people seem to forget that gasoline prices do not only pertain to the petrol you put in your tank. It also pertains to things like heating oil and natural gas.

If you are truly concerned about gasoline prices, you’re not alone. Many web sites have sprung up on the Internet that allow you to compare prices within your own community. I know that this summer all I had to do was drive an hour south to Pennsylvania to save money on gas. However, by the time I drove there and back I had spent as much as I had saved. Though the gasoline prices were cheaper there, it was not worth the trip for me. These new web sites allow you to compare gasoline stations in your own town. If you limit your search to your community, it will be worth the extra mile or two to save 20 or 30 cents per gallon on your gas.
