Most people don’t give much thought to the floor mat, but it is something that can be very useful. I had a problem with my computer chair last year, and I decided a mat was the perfect thing to help with the situation. I have hardwood floors, and the chair was slowly wearing away the spot where I sat to do work, and some of the wood was in danger of chipping. I got a plastic mat to put under my chair and the floor has been saved from further damage. We often think of these as things in offices and stores, but like I have found, there are many uses for them in the home.
A floor mat can also be used for pets. Though you certainly don’t want to cover your entire house with them, they are great under where pets have their food and water. If they have this on linoleum it might not be a problem, but anywhere else might need a little extra protection. I know that my cats often dig around on the floor near their food bowls. I don’t know why they do this, but I do know that putting down a small floor mat has stopped them from scratching up the floors.
Anyone with a home office should probably do what I did with the floor mat. Any type of computer chair will cause damage to any type of flooring. Carpeting can be worn down to the point where it can not be corrected. If a desk has been in one place for a long time, and no floor mat has been used, there is going to be a dent in the carpet eventually. Though some don’t move things around, most people get the urge once in a while. This area can ruin the look of any room.
Some also like to get a floor mat to put under the area where a baby sits in their high chair. Children are messy, and though it might be easy enough to clean up the floor when they are done, the floor mat will protect the floor from long term or irreversible damage. Some even like to use them under the washer and the dryer if the floor might be damaged by the footing knobs on the bottom of them. They aren’t often thought of as a ‘must have’ but they are very practical for preventing damage to almost any type of flooring out there.
