Fire Prevention And Safety - What Everyone Should Know

By: Nicky Patterson

There are many things that can scare a child including horror movies, imagined monsters under their beds and a fire. For most kids the closest they’ll ever come to an actual fire is one in their fireplace or a roaring campfire. Unfortunately house fires occur frequently and it’s important that every member of the family know what to do in the event of one. Having a fire prevention and safety plan in place is something every household needs.

Most children are given a tutorial on how important it is to be safe in the home, at school. Many schools now have assemblies in which they bring in a fireman to talk about fire prevention and safety with the students. He or she will explain how important it is to stay away from matches and lighters. They’ll also emphasize that children can’t use electrical appliances including stoves alone. This type of fire prevention and safety training usually has a lasting impact on children.

Parents need to get involved as well. There are several things that a parent can do at home to help educate a child about fire prevention and safety. One is to keep anything flammable out of the child’s reach. Although explaining to the child that these items are off-limits can work, children are naturally curious and quite often they’ll touch exactly what they’ve been told not to.

Another way to help a child understand that this is really a serious issue is by getting them directly involved with fire prevention and safety in the home. This can include showing them where the smoke alarms in the home are, explaining to them that if a fire ever does occur they must dial 911 and demonstrating an escape route from their bedroom.

Depending on the child’s age there is another important task that you can delegate to them. One vital part of any family’s fire prevention and safety plan is a meeting spot. This is a spot outside that every family member understands they are to meet at in the case of a fire. It can be a neighbor’s front yard or a home across the street. If a fire does occur it’s much easier to determine who is out of the home if everyone meets in one specific spot. This fire prevention and safety tip can ultimately save lives.

It’s important not to scare a child when you discuss this issue with them. This can lead to a lot of unnecessary anxiety. Instead approach it as a lesson that they simply must learn. Keep your fire prevention and safety discussions interesting and on a level that the child can understand. Explain that while the chances of a fire occurring in your home are very slim, it’s important that everyone understands what to do if it does happen.
