How To Deal With Difficult People

   By: Spencer McNight

The world is loaded with all walks of life. Naturally you're going to encounter a variety of people in your time spent here. An even greater variety if you travel abroad to other countries. This is a given! Some of these individuals will be jovial, sweet and as kind as ever. Unfortunately others will be the exact opposite. They will present you with drama. You may not know them, but they don't care. They'll give you grief from the moment you open your mouth. I've met several difficult people just like this in my day, and I often wonder what jaded them so. Either way, they need to address the chip on their shoulder and squash it.

My wife came home one day griping about her new supervisor. She said he was rude and pretentious as ever. She hardly knew the guy and he already made her feel like she was insignificant. I suppose he fits nicely into the difficult people category. Anyway, instead of actually listening to her speak, he chose to routinely cut her off in a meeting. As expected this left my wife furious and on the defensive. How could she possibly deal with this new boss on a daily basis? Well, needless to say, the unacceptable behavior continued. Finally she strutted on over to human resources and had a chat about her supervisor. In the end he was called-out on his behavior, but failed to change his ways. Finally he sought out employment elsewhere. I suppose it was for the best. No one wants to work with difficult people like this. They bring a bad vibe to the workplace and constantly send out negative energy. An energy that can hinder the progress of the entire staff.

Personally I've dealt with countless difficult people in the workplace. Since I spent over eight years of my life in customer service, I dealt with numerous angry customers, as well as employees who wanted to do nothing but hang out. This is all part of life. But, that doesn't mean you have to simply adapt to the annoying habits of difficult people. If you're having trouble with a co-worker such as this, report them to HR or a manager. And if your troubles are with a customer, you can always let the manager deal with it. This is what they're there for. Life is too short to be burdened by difficult people!
