When I need to relax, I usually get out a crossword puzzle, though it seems the time I have to do them gets less and less as time goes on. Not only are they relaxing, they also give your mind a workout. That may seem like a contradiction, but I assure you that you will get a small sense of satisfaction out of finishing a puzzle, even if you had to cheat a little on one or two answers. Some clues are just harder than others, and a little help never hurt anyone.
I used to love doing a crossword puzzle before I studied for a big exam in college. For some reason, I found that I studied and remembered the information better after I had done a puzzle. Perhaps a crossword puzzle is a good warm up to get your brain working before tackling something like studying. I’m not really sure, but I do know it worked really well for me. It seemed to get my mind moving in the right direction and helped me focus my mind away from everything else that was going on around me.
You can find a good crossword puzzle online or in your local paper, though may find some of them are too hard. Sometimes I can do a hard one, and other times I need a crossword puzzle that is rather easy. It all depends on mood and what I am hoping to accomplish. Sometimes you just need to feel smart and other times you need to have the sense of satisfaction that comes from finishing a puzzle without looking at the answers. If you want a real challenge, do a puzzle that has no answer key.
You can make your own crossword puzzle. I remember doing this in sixth grade, but we had to use graph paper to do it back then. Today, I am pretty sure that are many easier ways to do it, and you can probably find help online. You may even be able to find software that will help you build a crossword puzzle. You may think it might be too hard, but once you get started you may find that you can make some for your family for special occasions or just for fun. If you are having a family reunion, for example, you can make a puzzle up with clues about your family and things you may be doing at the reunion. Your family will love it, and they won’t soon forget it either.
