What Is Your Definition Of Contemporary Art?

By: Jamie Reynolds

What is art? Hmm, this is actually an excellent and rather complex question. Or is it? Some folks will tell you that art is in the eye of the beholder. If you deem it artwork, then it must be so. To be completely frank, I can't even begin to imagine why some folks think certain "masterpieces" are art. Often they look like nothing to me. I'll bet you know what I'm talking about. You go out to some local contemporary art show or fine museum and take a gander at the paintings. It sounds amusing, but some resemble pieces my 8 year old daughter concocts. Who knew she was so brilliant. I could slap a famous name on one of her paintings and make millions. Hey, that actually sounds like a plan.

Okay, so here's the deal. I took this contemporary art class in college and was exposed to some of the "brilliant artists" of our time. Now let me put this as simple as possible. One particular white canvas had a red dot in the center of it. Maybe the dot was not painted exactly in the center, but it was close enough. So how in God's name is that brilliant art? I truly don't get what makes that contemporary art piece special. I sure as heck wouldn't pay someone money for that. I too can make a red dot in the center of a white canvas. You know what; I can even one-up that artist and paint two dots, or maybe even three. Would it be worth twice as much if I did? Go figure!

So here's the deal; if you like to paint, draw or sculpt, you should certainly take up this hobby. You never know; contemporary art could be your calling. My father became an artist after he retired. It's easy for me to see why folks appreciate his wildlife drawings. They're highly detailed and sketched to perfection in pencil or pen. I love that kind of artwork. It's simple and to the point. You can literally see the talent possessed by the artist. However, the most expensive and priceless artwork is always the bizarre, abstract stuff. I suppose you can't put a price tag on something you can barely understand. The surreal aspect of it stirs interest.
