   By: Jamie Reynolds

It seems that the computer is at the forefront of almost everything nowadays. Even though they have been around for the last couple decades, personal computers still continue to be the most innovative, interesting thing out there. The Internet makes all kinds of things possible that our parents couldn't have even dreamed of when they were kids. There is light speed communication, streaming audio and video all over the world, and access to vast resources of data from the comfort of our own homes.

Nonetheless, there is a dark side to all of this innovation. Computer crimes continue to climb each and every year. Crimes like cyber hacking and the possession and trading of indecent materials, not to mention rampant copyright infringement, continue to make the headlines day after day.

The flip side of all of this is that computer crime investigation can be a lucrative career. Computer criminals are everywhere nowadays. There are hacker gangs working all over Europe, Asia, and the United States to steal personal information and use it for spamming campaigns or credit card fraud. They are smut peddlers sharing illegal and disturbing images with a secret list of high-paying clientèle. There are even people trying to hack into our communication systems to threaten our national security. Computer criminal investigation is the cutting edge, and it is one of the most fascinating fields out there.

From the people actually busting down the door, to security firms, to government intelligence agencies, there are many people who deal with the investigation of computer crimes. If you are interested in computer crime investigation as a career, there are many jobs for you. One of the most common jobs, of course, is computer security. Most companies are not interested in catching computer crime so much as preventing it. Computer security is a booming field, and is likely to remain so for years to come. As there will always be guards prevent property crimes, there will always be computer security experts to prevent computer crime.

Of course, one of the most overlooked fields in computer crime is computer criminal law. Lawyers with expertise in computer security and information are in high demand nowadays, and they can make quite a bit of money. Whether you are working as a government expert helping the prosecution, or as a defense lawyer helping to argue the case of someone accused of computer crimes, there are many positions available in the legal field.
